Language arts in grade 5 utilizes a workshop approach. Students will immerse themselves in a literature rich environment where they will focus on fiction and non-fiction reading and writing instruction. Students, in addition, will strengthen and develop their word work skills, which includes spelling, vocabulary, and grammar. Listening and speaking skills will also be developed and strengthened.
The units of study for reading include - Interpretation Book Clubs: Analyzing Themes, Tackling Complexity: Moving Up Levels of Nonfiction, Argument and Advocacy: Researching Debatable Issues, and Fantasy Book Clubs: The Magic of Themes and Symbols.
The units of study for writing include – Narrative Craft, The Lens of History: Research Reports, The Research Based Argument Essay, Fantasy: Synthesizing Narrative Skills

Independent Reading Expectations Students will be given time throughout the day to read. Making appropriate book choices and reading often is essential for developing those skills needed In addition to reading in school, students will be expected to read each night at home. Students will complete reading logs and reflect on their individual progress in class.
